A Shoreline Road Hugs Lake Willoughby Beneath Low Clouds

Lake Willoughby, in Westmore, Vermont, reads best from above, where its long, narrow shape becomes clear. The water runs straight toward a pale horizon, framed by low wooded hills on the far shore and a steep, color-heavy slope on the right. Along that slope, a two-lane road traces the waterline so closely that only a thin strip of trees and a band of stones separate asphalt from lake. A single red vehicle travels the road, small enough to give the hillside its true scale. The foliage is layered rather than uniform: crimson and orange crowns mixed with gold, a few bare white trunks, and dark evergreens holding their place among them. Overhead, a thick ceiling of gray and white cloud softens the light, so the colors stay rich without glare. The lake's surface carries only a fine ripple, silver near the center and darker near the shore. Here, beautiful Lake Willoughby feels less like a stop and more like a long, unhurried line to follow.
