Autumn Ridges Folded Into Still Water near Bondville

Near Bondville, Vermont, along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the water lies so calm that the hillsides seem to continue straight down beneath the surface. Orange, gold, and scattered red trees crowd the slopes, broken by dark spruce and fir that hold their green while everything around them turns. On the left, a pale gray rock face rises above a guardrail tracing the shoreline, and even that thin line appears again in the reflection. To the right, smooth boulders slide into the water. Above, the sky is cloudless blue. The same blue fills the center of the pond, framed by color on both sides. Shot with a Canon 5DSR and the EF 11-24mm f/4L USM, the wide view keeps the full sweep of both ridges and their mirrored doubles in a single frame. For anyone walking this part of the trail in fall, the still water is worth a pause.
