Light Breaking Through at Avery Point

Location
Avery Point Beach, Groton, CT 06340
Date photographed

Avery Point Beach in Groton opens onto Long Island Sound with a view that shifts constantly depending on the light. On this August afternoon, the sky dominated—clouds stacked in layers, some catching gold and cream where the sun found gaps, others dark and heavy with the weight of the day. The water below mirrored it all, a deep blue-gray that held the reflection of every cloud formation. There's a quietness to this stretch of shore, a sense of watching weather move across open water. The distant tree line marks the far shore, small and still. Standing here, you feel the scale of the sound—not ocean, but substantial enough to command attention.
