One Small Car Between Cliff and Lake at Willoughby

Seen from above, Lake Willoughby looks like a long, narrow channel set between two steep walls. Here in Westmore, Vermont, the road on the left of the frame keeps tight to the shoreline, its double yellow line curving gently toward the far end of the lake, where a single white vehicle gives the whole scene its scale. Beside it, the slope climbs fast and dense: orange and red hardwoods, gold crowns, and dark green conifers packed shoulder to shoulder. A thin strip of trees separates the pavement from the water. Across the lake, the opposite hillside carries the same mix of color up to a pale rock face, where a wisp of cloud clings to the cliff. The water itself is slate gray, catching only a soft sheen beneath the low ceiling of cloud. There is little room here for anything but road, trees, and lake, and that narrowness is what makes the view so absorbing.
