Cape May Lighthouse stands as one of the oldest continuously operating lighthouses in America, and its grounds have become a haven for migrating birds. This Purple Martin claimed one of the numbered nest boxes—marked with a simple C—that dot the lighthouse property. These iridescent dark birds are aerial insectivores, and their presence signals the richness of the coastal ecosystem. The birdhouse itself, with its clean white walls and dark trim, reflects the careful stewardship of the site. On an August morning, the martin paused on its perch, alert and watchful. The lighthouse tower rises behind, a steadfast backdrop to the smaller dramas of migration and nesting that unfold each season along this New Jersey shore.
