New London Ledge Lighthouse has stood on this rocky outcrop in Long Island Sound since 1909, a solitary sentinel marking the approach to New London Harbor. On this September evening, the water lay nearly flat, its surface broken only by the gentle passage of a single sailboat moving across the frame. The sky held that particular clarity of early fall—deep blue in places, pale where clouds caught the fading light.
